Youth and Adult Sunday School for February: Exploring the Juvenile Justice System Youth and adults are meeting together on Zoom for Sunday school in February. You are welcome to visit with each other at 9:30 or sign on at 9:45 a.m. when class begins. We are all aware of the heart-breaking, ever-rising violence among young people in our community. Additionally, we all agree that “something needs to change”. In February we delve into what that “something” should be, specifically within our juvenile justice system Congregation member and Juvenile Public Defender Eric Proctor will educate on the current juvenile justice system and facilitate discussion addressing the following: When, if ever, should children be incarcerated? And for how long?At what age should a child become an adult in the justice system? Should children ever be prosecuted as adults? Can the school to prison pipeline be disrupted? How?What roles do the following play: access to guns, race, poverty? What can the community do, outside of prosecution, to rehabilitate delinquent children? Finally, how does our faith as Christians, as CHPCers, and as a Matthew 25 congregation shape this conversation? 40 days of Nurture Hello Church Family. As we approach Lent, the members of Nurture Committee have committed to 40 Days of Nurture. These 40 days (not counting Sundays) is a liturgical season which prepares us for the resurrection of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Traditionally, Christians have been asked to give something up but we want to participate in 40 days of Nurture. 40 days of sending letters, 40 days of walking, 40 days of meditation. 40 days of reading the Equal Justice Initiative Calendar. You can decide how you want to participate. Please join us in 40 days of Nurture. |
Earth Care Sunday School for March CHPC earth care team members Stephen Bartlett and Andrew Kang Bartlett will lead Sunday School for youth and adults on zoom in March on trees, land and agriculture. Stephen is head of the CHPC community garden and the summer garden camps hosted there, owns a farm in the Dominican Republic, is former staff for Agricultural Missions, and active throughout the Louisville community with gardens, trees, land and agricultural issues. Andrew is national staff for the Presbyterian Hunger Program, active in local Louisville tree-planting and harvesting, cultivates crops in his St. Matthews yard, and does food justice advocacy throughout Louisville.March’s focus will pick-up what COVID interrupted last March: a discussion of the importance, meaning, and place of trees in our community. Stephen will share about the tree planting at his farm in the DR and Andrew about his own tree-planting projects at home and in Louisville, and we’ll also learn about city-wide efforts at increasing the tree canopy, increasing fruit tree accessibility, and using land for marginalized communities to grow food. We’ll discuss what we can all do—whether at church, in our own homes, in the city—to care for trees and all creation. Towards the end of the month, we will also explore public policy opportunities such as the THRIVE agenda and Green New Deal, to support broad environmental efforts. |
